Pharmacology and Medication Classification

This course provides in-depth knowledge of pharmacology and medication management for Pharmacy Technicians. Participants will explore medication nomenclature, understanding both generic and brand names, as well as, their classifications. The curriculum includes identification of common and severe drug interactions and contraindications, including those related to drug-disease, drug-drug, and dietary supplements. Students will learn about dosage and administration, covering strengths, doses, routes, and special handling instructions. Additionally, the course addresses the appropriate indications for various medications and dietary supplements, alongside issues of drug stability for formulations such as injectables and vaccines. A focus on narrow therapeutic index medications will emphasize the importance of monitoring to ensure safety and efficacy. Participants will gain insight into chemical incompatibilities that can occur during non-sterile compounding and learn best practices for proper medication storage to maintain efficacy. By the end of the course, participants will enhance their pharmacological knowledge and clinical skills, ultimately leading to improved patient safety and care outcomes.
